
The first ever World Championship event to take place in India was the BWF Badminton Championships between the 10th of August and the 16th of August. In spite of teams and individual players backing out of the contest due to security reasons and threats, the championships went well. Players from India, Denmark, Austria, People’s Republic of China, Indonesia, Thailand, South Korea, Hong Kong and Malaysia took part in the Championships. The matches were held at the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium in Gachibowli located in Hyderabad in the state of Andhra Pradesh. In the men’s singles event Lin Dan from China and fellow countryman Chen Jin entered the finals after defeating Sony Dwi Kuncoro and Taufik Hidayat, both from Indonesia, respectively. In the finals Lin Dan beat Chen Jin 21-18, 21-16. In the Women’s event Lu Lan from China won the title after beating Xie Xingfang also of China with score 23-21, 21-12.
