DAY 1, WTA TOURNAMENT-DOHA

The WTA Sony Ericsson championships which is the year ending contest for the 2009 WTA tour started in Doha yesterday. The Day 1 of the contest did not have any kind of surprises. But Serbian Jelena Jankovic was defeated in the opening match by 6th seed Victoria Azarenko who is seeded two places higher than Jankovic. The scores were an easy 6-2, 6-3. The thriller of the day came in the form of the extremely close match between Serena Williams and Svetlana Kuznetsova with the 2nd seeded American Williams defeated the 3rd seeded Russian with a tie breaker in the first set 7-6 and the second set with the score 7-5. But the other Williams didn’t have the same day. Venus Williams seeded 7, was defeated by Russian Elena Dementieva but in a hard fight from both of them leading to a 3 setter. Elena won the match 3-6, 7-6, 6-2. Today’s matches will be between Jankovic and top seed Safina and between the Williams sisters.
