The Table Tennis English Open at Sheffield which started on October 28th is now in the 3rd day. The opening round of the Men’s singles events has had quite a few surprises in store for the viewers. Tiago Apolonia from Portugal, who is just 23 years old, proved all expectations wrong by defeating one of the topmost players in the world, Wang Liqin who is from China. The No.4 seeded Wang was pushed to the extreme and the two players went on with a total of 7 games. Tiago beat his “idol” with the scores 11-5, 5-11, 7-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-8, 11-6. Meanwhile in the Women’s singles, most of the top seeded players like 2nd seeded Guo Yan from China, 6th seed Wang Yue Gu and Kim Kyung Ah from Korea who is seeded 4 have crossed the opening round successfully. Li Qian whos is seeded 15th and 23rd seed Petra Lovas were defeated by qualifiers.
