The 2009 WTA Sony Ericsson Championships is starting today, the 27th of October at Doha, Qatar. The around $4 million tournament is featuring some of the topmost players in Women’s tennis. These include the top seeded Russian Dinara Safina, Serena Williams who is seeded second for the tournament, sister Venus Williams who is seeded 7th, Elena Dementieva, 3rd seed Svetlana Kuznetsova also from Russia and Jelena Jankovic. Vera Zvonareva and Agnieszka Radwanska didn’t clear the qualifying. Meanwhile the Williams sisters, Samantha Stosur, Liezel Huber and Cara Black are taking part in the Doubles category. Today, the Day 1 of the tournament, matches will be played between Serena and Kuznetsova, Venus and Elena Dementiava and Victoria Azarenka and Jankovic respectively. This is the last year ending tournament of the Sony Ericsson WTA tour which started in Brisbane. The nearly week long contest will end on the 1st of November.
