What Makes Felines Lose Their Hair?
Cats, as adorable as they are, are constantly shedding fur. However, occasionally a cat will develop a health issue that causes even more hair loss than usual. Serious underlying conditions can cause this hair loss which is known as alopecia. All owners need to be concerned if they notice that their cat is losing hair or developing bald spots. Pruritic and non-pruritic are the two main categories of feline hair loss. Cats with pruritic hair loss will have itchy skin that causes them to bite, lick, and scratch more than usual. Cats with non-pruritic hair loss often don’t have itchy skin, but the affected area can be painful.
Pruritic hair loss is usually caused by allergic reactions. Humans and felines can both suffer allergic reactions. Reactions to flea or insect bites . Insect problems can be prevented by periodic medication from a vet. Switching brands of food may cause an allergic reaction. Your cat may also have one because of pollen, dust, or other irritants.
Felines can also develop ringworm which is caused by a fungus. If you don’t spot ringworm early, your cat can easily begin to lose its hair. Circular lesions will usually develop on cats with ringworm. Your cat will need to get anti-fungal cream to combat this condition. If you don’t get your cat treatment, then the condition won’t go away on its on for about three months.
Hyperthyroidism, dry skin, stress, injury, and Cushing’s disease are all other causes of feline hair loss. Some cats are prone to feline symmetrical alopecia because of their hormones. Hormone injections can usually be used to treat this condition. If you don’t know what’s causing the hair loss, don’t try to treat the condition on your own.
