It’s back to school at many colleges and universities, and the news is good. Enrollment numbers at many institutions are up, reaching record highs even. If families in this tough economy are struggling with finances and finding ways to come up with money to pay for tuition, it doesn’t show.

The enrollment increases come after a Fannie Mae report showing that families last year had to work longer hours and rely on more money from sources such as scholarships and grants to pay for college and university tuition. In an attempt to attract students, some lesser known institutions have provided scholarships to every student who enrolled, according to a recent article in US News and World Report. Now, experts say, the economy, changing labor needs and altered – in many instances more aggressive – college and university marketing efforts are reeling in students.

Many adults have reportedly been returning to college in the recession. This is what many say is contributing to increasing enrollment numbers. A recent DesMoinesRegister.com article included an expert quote that pointed also toward the fact that large foundations and the Barack Obama Administration have been encouraging people to go to college.

The Democrat and Chronicle, a newspaper in upstate New York, pointed toward increased enrollments at a host of institutions, including the Rochester Institute of Technology. This article also suggested that changing workplace demands and adult students going back to school might be a contributing factor. When students arrive at the Rochester Institute of Technology particularly on Aug. 30, they’ll also find a new, multi-billion dollar campus addition where residences and businesses evoke an international flavor.

In Florida, an Ocala.com article noted that the College of Central Florida has experienced a 36 percent jump – from 6,336 students in 2006-2007 to a record near-8,600 this year. The College of Central Florida on Aug. 27 was also planning a “recareering seminar.” The offering is intended to help senior citizens with resumes, applications, job development and interviewing skills that can help them move into new careers, according to a College of Central Florida announcement.

Institutions also report that they’ve taken marketing efforts to another level. At Oklahoma Wesleyan University, where the number of new student enrollments have reached a record, retention rates also are high, according to the Examiner-Enterprise.com. An Oklahoma Wesleyan University representative told the Examiner-Enterprise that the institution has instituted a newly aggressive marketing campaign and that it’s reaching out to prospective students at a fairly young age.

For-profit colleges and universities in the United States have reportedly seen success as a result of marketing techniques. Earlier this year, Inside Higher Education reported on a future of higher education gathering in the United States. For-profit college and university representatives from different parts of the world were involved and, according to the Inside Higher Education article, they were encouraged to utilize for-profit marketing methods as a means of achieving success as well.

Increased enrollment numbers at a variety of traditional and distance learning college programs throughout the state might be some indication that marketing and recruitment efforts are making a difference.
