Your Guide To Transferring A Basic HTML Web Page
If you want to start selling websites for a living, then you are going to need to know how to transfer websites to your buyers hosting accounts. If you don’t know how to do this already, that is completely fine because I am going to teach you how it is done. No, I’m not talking about how to move WordPress blogs, I’m talking about static HTML websites that do not require the use of a database to work. Either way, lets start.
Before you start, you need to know what you are working with. Consider what it is that you need to do. You are going to need to transfer a website (files included), plus you are going to need to transfer a domain, which comes in two stages. DNS change, and domain ownership transfer. Don’t worry, I’ll cover these in the right way so that the process can be smooth for both you and your buyers. After all, you want your buyers to be clients for life, right?
Starting off with your files, this is the easy part. If you use cPanel, you can simply zip these files up and download them locally. From here, you can re-upload them to the new owners hosting account and extract them. This is pretty basic, however if you are not using cPanel, things get a little slow. You will need to use FTP in this instance to transfer all of the files locally, and re-upload them to the new hosting account. This can be time consuming however, so a little patience is required. Just remember that if there is a chance that you can compress the files down to the zip file, this will help you retain the file permissions necessary.
Now it will be time to change your DNS settings, and test the new installation. For all intensive purposes, I highly recommend creating a test file on the new hosting account so that you can access it when the DNS has refreshed. This can take up to 48 hours, but in most cases, it is reasonably quick for the three major top level domains.
When you are able to confirm that the transfer has been successful, you can now initiate the domain transfer process. This is easier than it sounds, and like anything, if any of what I am about to tell you makes little sense, please chat to the support department for your domain registrar as they will be able to point you in the right direction. First, retrieve your EPP code for your domain, and send this through to the new owner. They will then initiate the transfer by making a request through their own registrar. The process can take a few days, and please make sure that you keep an eye out for any emails from your current registrar to approve the transfer.
Sounds pretty easy to transfer a website, doesn’t it? Just remember – this is not the process to move WordPress blogs, as we are not dealing with databases today. This is important, because if you attempt to use this process with any database driven website, it will not work. Just keep practicing on this method first, then learn the rest later.
