A Basic Education About Search Engine Optimization
I’m just going to put this one out there. SEO is a hard skill to get a grasp of. It is quite easy to learn, but to master it is a life long commitment. There are many courses out there that will teach you SEO in the space of a few hours or so, but at the end of the day, it is only through actually putting what you know into practice, learning what works, and what doesn’t, that you will get a real grasp of how it all works. So, lets get down to it. Am I going to teach you how to do good SEO today? Not really, but I am going to give you a run down of a few of the basics that you need to know at this point, and how to get your backlinks indexed.
First things first – SEO is a game that has an end goal that you never truly win. You compete for the end goal – ranking in the number one position for a chosen keyword. I know many people who are all too easy to give up on specific keywords too, however at the end of the day, if a keyword has a fair amount of competition associated with it, chances are it is going to be a fairly profitable keyword, and one that you should be targeting. That said, there is the simple matter of how resourceful you are. For those of us who are just learning SEO, we will find it utterly impossible to win specific high competition phrases, that said, that doesn’t mean that there are some lower competition phrases that we can rank for and still make some good income from them.
Apart from being about keywords, SEO is also about links. In fact, in large part, the search engines will count a total number of backlinks pointing to any one page, and this will play a large part towards determining how a page ranks for a particular keyword. Now, it is all too easy to say that you only need more backlinks to outrank your competition, but this is not the case. In fact, it is also a matter of reputation. For example, you may have 100 links from low value and “unknown” websites, but your competition will have much less, but these links will be from highly reputable websites. On top of that, your competition will rank higher than you, and you have a great deal of trouble outranking them. How is this done? Simple. You play the game, and find some high authority links. This is the fun of SEO.
The other thing that is very well worth understanding is that in order for your backlink building and SEO work to be worth your time, the search engines will need to be aware of any links that you have created. Unfortunately, the search engines are not psychic, and can not automatically dig out your links from the billions that are currently live. In order to do this, you simply need to generate a link from a page that is already indexed in the search engines. This simple method of backlinks indexing will save you many headaches at a later date, and will save you doing much more work than you need to.
You know, I’ve covered a lot here, but I want to go back on the idea that you can know all of this stuff, but it is not going to make a difference at all unless you practice through implementation. This is exactly how we get good at anything, especially in the game of SEO. This game is always changing, new rules and algorithm changes. Don’t take what I teach with a grain of salt. Consistently implement, and you will soon find that you are unstoppable in the search engines. I promise.
